Divine DC Style Spring Fashion Show

Divine Style DC hosted their Spring Fashion Show Soiree at Puro Cafe, on Thursday, April 4th, to benefit Becky’s Fund. Fifteen male and female models presented the latest in spring trends from boutiques all over Georgetown and D.C., while walking to the beats of Deejay Neekola.

On Saturday, May 4, 2012, Becky’s Fund will partner with Irish Whiskey, Mighty Pint,Wilson Tavern to present the 7th Annual “Investing in Hope” fundraiser at the Spring Virginia Gold Cup in Warrenton, Virginia.

Funds raised from this annual fundraiser will help us continue our programs that educate our youth through our Young Men’s Mentorship and Men of CODE programs, “Becoming Your Own Heroine” workshops for young girls, National Domestic Violence College Tour, while supporting our Financial Literacy program and direct services and support for survivors and their children.

Celebrating Pageantry and Birthdays!

Last night was declared an official “Girls Night Out” when hosts Allison Brooks and former Miss DC 2006 Kate Michael hosted a Miss America Viewing Party at City Tavern Club.  Ladies (and even one pint-sized male guest) snacked on chocolate-covered everything (along with a few other hors d’ oeuvres), sipped on cocktails, dressed up in tiaras and boas, and cheered on the Miss America contestants.  Although we’re sad to say that Miss DC did not make it into the top 15, she did win the Best Interview Award.  I’d also like to congratulate Miss Virginia for making it into the Top 12!

The Documentary Premiere of Dressed

Yesterday evening, I was invited to see the DC documentary premiere of “Dressed” at Bethesda Row’s Landmark Theater.  The story is about a young designer, by the name of Nary Manivong, who in just two years has gone from homeless to up-and-coming super star.

His history wasn’t this simple.  Nary was homeless at 14 – he, his two brothers and one sister were abandoned by his parents and thus began a huge life struggle for him.  He put himself through high school, slept at a donut shop every night for a year, moved to New York City with $200 in his pocket and took odd jobs to save enough money to not just live, but also sustain his dream: creating a collection for New York Fashion Week.  He got by with the help of friends, teachers and investors.  For about $11,000, he created his first collection and it debuted at SS10 fashion week.

It wasn’t until he ran into Ally Hilfiger at a dinner party that things changed.  She became his creative director before turning to her father to encourage him to call Nary and get his business up and running.  Thus, NAHM (Nary Ally Hilfiger Manivong) was born – a joint venture between Ally and Nary.

The Business of Fashion

Throughout this documentary, you learn a lot about the underbelly of fashion – a world that proves almost everyone starts out as a “starving artist”.  They say that 60% of young designers fail within the first year and 80% within the second. And according to Fern Mallis, one of the biggest expenses that bankrupts them is getting the designs made at the Garment District. With strict rules about paying cash before the designs are released, most designers don’t have the money to get their full collections released.  (An average small collection costs around $10,000 and there is no guarantee that the collection will be done on-time and on-budget.)

Fashion Week

Several hundred designers show their lines at fashion week – in any space they can get.  Back in the day, young designers would hold their shows right outside of tents, with the hopes of being discovered. These days, designers are taking any space they can get and because of the sheer excitement around fashion week, even the “housewife” is showing up to take in any show they can, thus creating packed shows, no matter how big or small the designer.

Want to hold a show of your own? The average show costs $250,000.  However, young designers are proving their business sense by tirelessly pounding the phones to get location donations, model donations, hair and makeup donations, etc. to help put their show together.

So what’s the next step – how do you make money?  Sales come from appointments that are set after fashion week concludes. Reviews help a lot in this case.  The better the review, the higher chance of product being sold.

Advice

After the documentary concluded, it was Q&A time with Nary and his Videographer David.  They offered the following advice for both budding videographers and designers:

  • We all have stories to tell – the tech is out there to make your story a reality.  Find something unique that is special to you and go for it.
  • Learn the business of fashion – intern and network, as it opens a lot of doors.  Have patience.
  • There are no guarantees with a contract for samples, etc.  It’s all about relationships.  If something falls out, you need back ups.  You need to not be afraid to ask for that help – it could be everything.
  • Don’t choose fabrics or embellishments that are limited edition.  It will be really hard to fulfill orders for garments when the fabric no longer exists or those were “the last buttons”.

About the Documentary and Where You Can Learn More/Shop His Collection

The entire documentary was made with volunteers – even the soundtrack were songs, donated from Indie artists who believe in supporting up-and-coming artists.  You can download the songs and the money will go straight back to the artists.  All DVD and apparel sales will go to homeless organizations.

Nary’s collection has debuted in stores in New York, Japan, London, Dubai and Turkey, with an expansion due to hit L.A., South Carolina, Dallas and a few other cities and states.

The price point for dresses is $495 – $1200.

The Day Missoni Crashed Target

Like so many of us, I got up early to do a “flash shop” of Missoni’s line at Target.  Call it wanting to be part of the experience – it’s the thrill of securing coveted items that only a few will get their hands on before it’s all sold out.  I had actually never allowed myself to be part of an experience, such as this, until today, realizing that it would be fun to have a Missoni bathroom in my new place (usually, I believe diffusion lines take away from owning true luxury). Thus, I got up at 7:30am to see what I could pull before the throws of people set in.  Just as I was going through my cart to pull out what I decided I didn’t want, first the checkout feature stopped working, then the inventory on the pages disappeared and then, the ill-fated message:

There’s the first problem… you’ve sent a dog to fix it.  Seriously though, coming from the tech world and seeing this happen dozens of times before, it’s a wonder that no one seems to anticipate this happening.  What is interesting… who powers Target’s ecommerce site until the early 2012… Amazon.  I would say it’s bad timing for Missoni to partner with Target, as Target is going through a roll-out of their new ecommerce system, sans Amazon (although I’m sure for this purpose, they wouldn’t be dumb enough to roll this out on their new infrastructure… would they?).  Thus, is Amazon’s existing infrastructure or Target’s new one to be blamed for the crash?  Target will tell you it’s the sheer volume of people using it today and there was no way to get around that.  I’m not so sure.  In an article by amazonstrategies.com, Target sells about $1.2B worth of goods online, with millions shopping daily (granted, spread out over a period of 24 hours, not in two).  Around the holidays, they are slammed like any other site and, if they are still running on Amazon’s servers, there is the capacity to handle it.  If anything at all, they had 6 months to prepare for this day, which equates to adding dedicated servers if they had to.  Not enough of an argument?  Recent experiences with the Target pop-up store for Missoni, the line around the block for Lanvin with H&M, rare (coveted) flash sales with Gilt Group, all prove one thing: it’s better to be safe than sorry.  Not to be incredibly sexist but it makes me wonder if the head of IT (which on LinkedIN, is a male and so far, I have only seen male infrastructure employees), doesn’t understand that when there is a sale on something EVERY FEMALE from here to Antarctica WANTS, that maybe a few additional servers wouldn’t hurt.  It’s case study, after case study of proving that it’s no longer just supply vs. demand.  It’s supply vs. demand vs. handling capacity.

Following the Red Sole Suit

If you have been reading my weekly postings on Washinton Life Magazine‘s Trend Report: Global Fashion Roundup, you will have undoubtedly seen updates on the now infamous Christian Louboutin lawsuit, slapped by Yves Saint Laurent.  In case you have missed it, it can be summarized in three words: Iconic Red Sole.

According to Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Louboutin should not be able to hold a patent on selling a red sole exclusively because as they have pointed out, they have been selling them periodically a lot longer than Louboutin has been around (and went so far as to bring up Louis XVI who periodically had red-soled shoes made).  Although humorous comments have been made about grown men arguing over the color of the sole of a shoe, it’s a serious issue.  According to sources, spies for Louboutin were going to stores and pulling YSL’s shoes off the shelf.  In addition, these soles have been easy to knock off with women PAINTING the bottom of their heels to look like the real thing (or buying faux Louboutins where someone else has done that work for you).  So what comes of this for Louboutin fans and aspirational customers?

Photographer, illustrator and writer – Garance Dore – has taken a new stance on this saying, “I love Louboutin’s designs, and admire their craftsmanship, the identifiable soles actually lessen my interest in owning a pair. At least one of my editors paints their soles black.”  Why?  Because those customers that are true buyers aren’t looking to show off a label – they are going for style.  The question is, how many people will follow suit?  So many aspirational buyers love the iconic red heel but if this suit changes what Louboutin can and cannot do, would you still buy the brand?

My take on this is three things… 1) Louboutin should have looked into a patent for a particular shade of red – that they can do.  Other companies out there have patented their colors, such as the Tiffany Blue.  It’s such a unique shade that it is very hard to get exactly right.  2) Those that don’t like to show off labels already don’t.  In my Washington Life printed fashion issue article for 2011, I stated that although DC’ers may look “boring” in their dark-colored suits, most passersby have no idea what labels these suit-wearers are truly wearing – most are more expensive than you think.  It goes without saying that true customers aren’t paying for the label – they are paying for the style, comfortability (in some cases) and practicality. 3) People love Jimmy Choo and Manolo Blahnik – both touted by Sex and the City for years.  They have nothing iconic about them, other than that they are art.  Really, it comes down to loving the designs for what they are, not what’s “underneath”.

 

 

Book Reviews: Last Night at Chateau Marmont

Another great read I finished, while on my vacation to Cancun!  About Last Night at Chateau Marmont:

Brooke loved reading the dishy celebrity gossip rag Last Night. That is, until her marriage became a weekly headline.  Brooke was drawn to the soulful, enigmatic Julian Alter the very first time she heard him perform “Hallelujah” at a dark East Village dive bar.  Now five years married, Brooke balances two jobs—as a nutritionist at NYU Hospital and as a consultant to an Upper East Side girls’ school, where privilege gone wrong and disordered eating run rampant—in order to help support her husband’s dream of making it in the music world.  Things are looking up when after years of playing Manhattan clubs and toiling as an A&R intern, Julian finally gets signed by Sony.  Although no one’s promising that the album will ever hit the airwaves, Julian is still dedicated to logging in long hours at the recording studio. All that changes after Julian is asked to perform on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno—and is catapulted to stardom, literally overnight. A new designer wardrobe, a tour with Maroon 5, debuting at number four on the charts, and even a Grammy performance.  At first the newfound fame is fun—who wouldn’t want to stay at the Chateau Marmont or visit the set of one of television’s hottest shows, or be on the cover of every magazine? Yet it seems that Brooke’s sweet husband—the man who can’t handle hot showers and wears socks to bed—is increasingly absent, even on those rare nights they’re home together. When rumors about Brooke and Julian swirl in the tabloid magazines (think fabricated affairs), she begins to question the truth of her marriage and is forced to finally come to terms with what she thinks she wants—and what she actually needs.

This book starts out slow but increases in excitement as the pages go on.  It easily sweeps you up into the whirlwind life of a budding musician-turned rockstar.  I highly recommend.
