It’s right up there with the midnight madness of the Christmas shopping season; those that waited in line for hours to get into an H&M for a major collaboration that went on sale… and the countdown to a New Year. Some (like me) wanted to get their hands on a new phone because they decided to pass on the 4S and their current phone was starting to grow a walker and some orthopedic shoes; others just wanted to say they were one of the first to order it (which I think it should come with a plaque or something for those on the east coast, who either stayed up that long or set their alarms for 3am).
As an AT&T customer, I assumed it would be easier to go through their site, since I’ve been sitting on my upgrade, waiting for this day to come. And when I went there, it gave you this big, glorious countdown clock.
Personally, I would have loved the countdown beep from 24 for the last minute or so but instead, the silence was enough excitement for me, as I just wanted to order it so I could go back to sleep. So…. the counter is at 10.. 9… 8… 7… 6… 5… (smile spreading) 4… 3… 2….. and (inhale) 1. At that point I could almost see a mad rush of people wanting to storm the Apple doors, trying to nab a pre-sale. And at one second…. ummm…. -1.5 seconds? -2 seconds? … -10 minutes?! The site was still down – both Apple and AT&T. Then… Facebook went down. Then… there’s a brief moment of panic that the Mayans had something to do with this and that it signaled the end of the world.
Quick thinking led me to my AT&T Mobile App and there it was… me getting “snuck in” through the back door to order it a full 10 minutes before any other site came online. (Happy sigh).
64GB of white hardware is mine next week!
